To evaluate the whiteness index (W) and surface roughness (Ra) of bovine enamel after simulated tooth brushing with different commercial and experimental whitening dentifrices.
Cylindrical enamel bovine specimens were acid etched, stained, and divided in nine groups (n=?8) Colgate® Optic White®, Crest® Baking Soda and Peroxide, Arm and Hammer® Advanced White™ Extreme Whitening, Rembrandt® Deeply White®?+?Peroxide, Close up® White Attraction Natural Glow, Hinode Prowhite, and experimental dentifrice containing papain (PP), bromelain (PB), or papain and bromelain (PPB). Ra and Wwere obtained initially and after 600, 1200, and 3,600?cycles of simulated tooth brushing. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance test (α=?0.05).
Ra was significantly influenced by both dentifrice (p=?0.043) and period of tooth-brushing simulation (p<?0.001). Except for PP and PPB, all groups showed a statistically significant increase in Ra after simulated tooth brushing. After staining and brushing, none orinsic stains without undesired abrasiveness; however, this effect may be due to the use of less aggressive abrasives in their formulations.Macrophages are desirable targets for gene therapy of cancer and other diseases. Cationic diblock copolymers of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and poly-L-lysine (PLL) or polyN-[N-(2-aminoethyl)-2-aminoethyl]aspartamide (pAsp(DET)) are synthesized and used to form polyplexes with a plasmid DNA (pDNA) that are decorated with mannose moieties, serving as the targeting ligands for the C type lectin receptors displayed at the surface of macrophages. https://www.selleckchem.com/ The PEG-b-PLL copolymers are known for its cytotoxicity, so PEG-b-PLL-based polyplexes are cross-linked using reducible reagent dithiobis(succinimidyl propionate) (DSP). The cross-linked polyplexes display low toxicity to both mouse embryonic fibroblasts NIH/3T3 cell line and mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMΦ). In macrophages mannose-decorated polyplexes demonstrate an ?8 times higher transfection efficiency. The cross-linking of the polyplexes decrease the toxicity, but the transfection enhancement is moderate. The PEG-b-pAsp(DET) copolymers display low toxicity with respect to the IC-21 murine macrophage cell line and are used for the production of non-cross-linked pDNA-contained polyplexes. The obtained mannose modified polyplexes exhibit ca. 500-times greater transfection activity in IC-21 macrophages compared to the mannose-free polyplexes. This result greatly exceeds the targeting gene transfer effects previously described using mannose receptor targeted non-viral gene delivery systems. These results suggest that Man-PEG-b-pAsp(DET)/pDNA polyplex is a potential vector for immune cells-based gene therapy. The separation of germ cell populations from the soma is part of the evolutionary transition to multicellularity. Only genetic information present in the germ cells will be inherited by future generations, and any molecular processes affecting the germline genome are therefore likely to be passed on. Despite its prevalence across taxonomic kingdoms, we are only starting to understand details of the underlying micro-evolutionary processes occurring at the germline genome level. These include segregation, recombination, mutation and selection and can occur at any stage during germline differentiation and mitotic germline proliferation to meiosis and post-meiotic gamete maturation. Selection acting on germ cells at any stage from the diploid germ cell to the haploid gametes may cause significant deviations from Mendelian inheritance and may be more widespread than previously assumed. The mechanisms that affect and potentially alter the genomic sequence and allele frequencies in the germline are pivotal to our understanding of heritability. With the rise of new sequencing technologies, we are now able to address some of these unanswered questions. In this review, we comment on the most recent developments in this field and identify current gaps in our knowledge.Hippocampal sclerosis of aging (HS) is a common pathology often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease. We tested the hypothesis that participants with HS would have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-detectable hippocampal pattern of atrophy distinct from participants without HS, both with and without Alzheimer's disease neuropathology (ADNP).
Query of the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center database identified 198 participants with MRI and autopsy. Hippocampal subfields were segmented with FreeSurfer v6. Analysis of covariance for subfield volumes compared HS+ participants to those without HS, both with ADNP (HS-/ADNP+) and without (HS-/ADNP-).
HS+ participants (N=27, 14%) showed atrophied cornu ammonis 1 (CA1; left P<.001, η=0.14; right P=.001, η=0.09) and subiculum (left P<.001, η=0.139; right P=.001, η=0.085) compared to HS-/ADNP+ (N=100, 51%). Compared to HS-/ADNP- (N=71, 36%), HS+ also had atrophy in subiculum (left P<.001, η=0.235; right P=.002, η=0.137) and CA1 (left P<.001, η=0.137; right P=.006, η=0.070).
Subiculum and CA1 atrophy from clinical MRI may be a promising in vivo biomarker for HS.
Subiculum and CA1 atrophy from clinical MRI may be a promising in vivo biomarker for HS.Sarcoidosis-lymphoma syndrome describes a pathological state wherein both sarcoidosis and lymphoma are present. Sarcoidosis and lymphoma may occur concurrently, or sarcoidosis may precede lymphoma. There are few reports which have previously described the temporal progression from lymphoma to sarcoidosis. Here, we present a patient with stage II diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the right breast. The patient achieved complete remission after chemotherapy. Five years after remission, the patient visited our clinic with newly developed enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes; lymphoma recurrence was suspected. However, mediastinal lymph node biopsy showed numerous noncaseating granulomas with no evidence of malignancy in the mediastinal lymph nodes. Consequently, a diagnosis of sarcoidosis was made. This case report highlights the need for pathological confirmation following biopsy when recurrence of lymphoma is suspected.
